Spartz Honors Vietnam War Veteran

Muncie, IN – Today, Rep. Victoria Spartz (IN-05) honored Vietnam War veteran Roy Springfield with two military awards: the National Defense Service Medal and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. Mr. Springfield served as an Army sergeant in the Vietnam War and was one of the last soldiers to leave his base. As he was exiting the base, Mr. Springfield managed to secure an American flag, rescuing it from enemy hands. This same flag was present with him at the awards ceremony today, as were his friends and family members.
"It was my privilege to present Mr. Springfield with two important awards honoring his service and sacrifice for our nation,” said Rep. Spartz. "I am so grateful for Roy's bravery and humbled to express our appreciation on behalf of the Americans people, even if 61 years later.”

Background: The National Defense Service Medal is awarded for honorable active military service as a member of the armed forces of the United States. The Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal is awarded to members of the United States armed services who, after July 1, 1958, have participated in a United States military operation and encountered foreign armed opposition, or were in danger of hostile action by foreign armed forces.
